April 19: Blue Heron Bridge Shore Dive

Often called the "Muck Diving Capital of the World," the Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park is a world-renowned shore dive famous for its incredible biodiversity and "critter" hunting. Divers visit from around the globe to spot rare macro species that are difficult to find anywhere else in the Atlantic.

Diverse Marine Life

The site acts as a nursery for a vast array of juvenile species and exotic creatures that camouflage themselves in the sand, seagrass, and bridge structures.

  • Macro Favorites: You are likely to see several species of seahorses (vibrant yellow or brown), pipefish, and the elusive frogfish, which often resemble sponges or rocks.

  • Cephalopods: The area is home to various octopuses, including the common octopus and the Atlantic long-arm (often compared to a mimic octopus).

  • Bizarre Bottom Dwellers: Keep an eye out for "walking" fish like flying gurnards and batfish, as well as venomous stargazers buried in the sand with only their eyes visible.

  • Large Residents: It is not uncommon to come face-to-face with a massive Goliath Grouper under the bridge spans or see spotted eagle rays gliding through the shallow channels.

Underwater Attractions & Structures

The dive is generally split into three main areas of interest, each offering a different habitat for marine life.

  • The Snorkel Trail: This 800-foot-long artificial reef features limestone boulders, reef balls, and a collection of statues, including three hammerhead sharks that have become a favorite photo op.

  • The East & West Bridges: The bridge pilings are covered in colorful sponges and soft corals, providing homes for angelfish, blennies, and arrow crabs. Under the East span, you can also find a sunken sailboat that attracts schools of spadefish.

  • Mini Wrecks: Several small boat wrecks are scattered throughout the site, acting as hubs for lobsters, moray eels, and large schools of grunts.

Dive Planning Essentials

Because the site is located in the Lake Worth Lagoon, conditions are extremely tidal-dependent.

  • Timing: To ensure the best visibility and safety, you must time your dive for slack high tide (typically entering the water 30–60 minutes before high tide).

  • Safety Requirements: A dive flag is strictly required by law for all divers. You must also stay out of the clearly marked boat channels that run under the center of the bridge.

  • Ease of Access: Entry is a simple walk-in from the beach at Phil Foster Park, where you'll find fresh-water showers and gear-up tables.
