South Florida Scuba Diving: Harvey's Guide to the Best Local Dive Sites

If you're looking for some of the best South Florida scuba diving, you've come to the right place.

I'm Harvey, Expedition Leader at Divers Cove, and one of my favorite things is introducing divers to the incredible underwater world we have right here in our backyard. Whether you've just earned your Open Water certification or you've logged hundreds of dives, South Florida offers an amazing variety of dive experiences that keep even the most experienced divers coming back for more.

Within just a couple of hours, you can explore colorful coral reefs, dramatic limestone ledges, world-famous shipwrecks, exhilarating drift dives, and one of the largest seasonal gatherings of Goliath groupers anywhere in the world.

The best part? No two dives are ever the same.

Why South Florida Is One of the World's Best Scuba Diving Destinations

South Florida is blessed with warm, clear water, easy access to offshore reefs, and the Gulf Stream, which brings exceptional visibility and an abundance of marine life year-round.

Depending on where we dive, you may encounter:

  • Green and Loggerhead sea turtles

  • Caribbean reef sharks

  • Nurse sharks

  • Goliath groupers

  • Eagle rays

  • Southern stingrays

  • Moray eels

  • Schools of tropical reef fish

  • Lobsters during the season

  • Colorful hard and soft corals

Because our dive sites range from shallow reefs to deep wrecks, there is truly something for every diver.

Jupiter: Florida's Famous Drift Diving

Jupiter is one of my favorite places to dive.

Known for exciting drift dives and healthy reefs, Jupiter offers some of the most memorable underwater encounters in Florida. During the late summer, divers travel from around the world to witness the incredible Goliath Grouper Aggregation, where dozens of these massive yet gentle fish gather on local reefs and wrecks.

Beyond the groupers, Jupiter is well known for:

  • Reef sharks

  • Sea turtles

  • Eagle rays

  • Large schools of fish

  • Crystal-clear Gulf Stream water

Most dives range between 60 and 95 feet, making them ideal for Advanced Open Water and Nitrox certified divers.

Palm Beach: Beautiful Reefs and Sharkies Ledge

Palm Beach County offers some of the healthiest reefs in South Florida.

One of our favorite destinations is Sharkies Ledge, a beautiful drift dive featuring limestone ledges, swim-throughs, and colorful coral formations.

The reef is home to:

  • Caribbean reef sharks

  • Nurse sharks

  • Loggerhead turtles

  • Green turtles

  • Stingrays

  • Goliath groupers

  • Schools of tropical fish

With depths between 45 and 60 feet, Sharkies Ledge is an excellent destination for Open Water Divers looking to experience Palm Beach drift diving.

Fort Lauderdale: The Wreck Diving Capital of Florida

Fort Lauderdale is famous for its incredible collection of artificial reefs and shipwrecks.

Some of our favorite local dives include:

  • Lady Luck

  • Jay Scutti

  • Copenhagen

  • Hog Heaven

  • Barracuda Reef

  • The Nursery

Whether you're exploring a historic wreck or cruising over a thriving reef, Fort Lauderdale offers fantastic diving throughout the year.

It's also one of the best places to continue your dive education with specialties like:

  • Wreck Diver

  • Deep Diver

  • Enriched Air (Nitrox)

  • Full Face Mask

  • Drift Diver

Miami: Tropical Reefs Close to the City

Miami offers a fantastic mix of reef and wreck diving.

Its shallow reefs are filled with colorful marine life, while deeper sites attract larger pelagic species and experienced divers looking for new adventures.

Miami's proximity makes it a great destination for day trips and weekend diving.

The Florida Keys: America's Coral Reef

No guide to South Florida scuba diving would be complete without mentioning the Florida Keys.

Home to the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, the Keys offer breathtaking reef diving, abundant marine life, and crystal-clear water.

Whether you're diving Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, or Key West, every trip offers something unique.

Diving Conditions in South Florida

One of the biggest advantages of diving here is that it's truly a year-round destination.

Typical conditions include:

  • Water Temperature: 72°F–86°F (22°C–30°C)

  • Visibility: Often 50–100+ feet

  • Dive Style: Boat diving and drift diving

  • Current: Moderate Gulf Stream current on many Palm Beach County dive sites

Every day is different, and that's what makes diving here so exciting.

What Certification Do You Need?

South Florida offers dive sites for every experience level.

Open Water Divers can enjoy many beautiful reef dives.

Advanced Open Water Divers can access deeper wrecks and drift dives.

For many of our Jupiter expeditions, Nitrox certification is also required, allowing divers to maximize bottom time while diving deeper profiles.
